Project coaching

The success of a project is shaped by people, not by the methods or the technical tools applied. Project coaching refers to the targeted development and support of a project team, where members can be internal or external to the organization or come from different departments within the organization. Just as in team sports where success depends on team play, so in a business environment, the project’s success depends on the team members’ willingness to cooperate, and communicate with one another and with other teams.

  • Who is it for?

Project coaching can be used at the beginning of the project, when defining the scope, goals and plans for the project, or throughout its life cycle, when the project is not progressing as planned, or there is a lot of personal conflict among team members and stakeholders. Coaching increases project efficiency, strengthens the team’s creative problem-solving ability, fosters collaboration, and helps project managers improve their “soft skills” when engaging with their teams or senior stakeholders.

  • How do I work as a project coach?

As a coach, I participate in the project both internally and externally, as an individual and team coach. First, I take part in real-life project meetings and workshops to assess the fitness of the team’s current level of maturity and behaviors that are impacting on performance both positively and negatively, after which I discuss with the team or the team manager what level of intervention is needed. My contribution can be on a case-by-case basis or throughout the project.

As a coach, I do not give advice and I do not lead the project, but I support the project sponsor, project manager or team to get the most out of their project. However, my hands-on experience in project management enables me to fully understand the challenges of the project participants. If you require interim management or project consultancy services too, I can undertake them in a separate contract.

  • How many sessions are needed, how much do I charge, and where do I work?

Project coaching can be a single intervention, but a minimum of three interventions is recommended for significant impact. The price and the length of project coaching are subject to individual agreement, and the location is provided by the customer. If you are interested in a project coaching program for your project team, please get in touch. I would be happy to discuss your needs and then develop a proposal for you on the basis of our conversation.

  • Why would you want to work with me?

Between 2006 and 2018, I managed numerous IT systems implementation, strategic business and organizational development projects, and large programs as a project and program manager or PMO manager; both internationally and locally. During my professional career, I regularly coached or mentored other project managers, too. At BAT and Vodafone, I also conducted in-house project management training sessions for over 200 colleagues, followed, in many cases, by coaching and mentoring.

I am an internationally certified PMP project manager with additional certification in PRINCE2 project methodology. In 2013 I was awarded “Project Manager of the Year” in Hungary for the execution of the first Vodafone RED campaigns. I am an active member of two professional associations, the American Project Management Institute and the Hungarian Project Management Association. Also, since 2017 I have lectured at Corvinus University’s Department of Strategy and Project Management, on the importance of social and emotional intelligence in projects.

My key references in project coaching include a program director and an IT program manager at a Hungarian oil company, called MOL, various senior managers at BAT Hungary, and business leaders at Vodafone Hungary.
